The Tools
Hardly Thinking applies thirty practical reasoning tools, grouped into six families, to examine how claims are made, tested, defended, and sold, from the biases that shape what we notice to the words that shape what we’re able to say. If the grammars explain why a conclusion feels right, the tools are how we check whether it is, and every tool can be turned into a weapon by someone more interested in winning than understanding.
The six families follow the path a claim takes through your head:
- A. Bias Literacy: errors that happen before reasoning starts.
- B. Inference Discipline: errors in the step from evidence to conclusion.
- C. Testing and Calibration: proportioning belief to evidence.
- D. Influence Defense: recognizing the engineering behind persuasion.
- E. Language Precision: language as power, handled carefully.
- F. Discourse Practice: disagreement as a skill.
For the recurring patterns these tools work against, see the Grammars.

Works against
- C5The Cynicism Firewall

Works against
D. Influence Defense
Recognizing the engineering behind persuasion.
- D1The Incentive Trace
Who profits from my believing this? Adjust for it, then still check the claim.
Works against
- D2The Rage Audit
Strong emotion is information about how a message was designed, not about the world.
Works against
- D3The Motte-and-Bailey Marker
Pin the claim down: are we discussing the modest version or the ambitious one?
Works against
- D4The JAQ Detector
A genuine question accepts answers; watch what happens when one arrives.
Works against
- D5The Thought-Terminator Catalog
Keep a list of the phrases that end your thinking, and notice when one is used.
E. Language Precision
Language as power, handled carefully.
- E1The Taboo-the-Word Move
Set the contested word aside and make every side say what it means in plain terms.
Works against
- E2The Operationalization Demand

Works against
- E3The Euphemism X-Ray
